The Nation's First Surface-printed Flexo Shrink Sleeve Label Exclusively from CCL Auto-Sleeve

Surface-printed Flexo Shrink Sleeve Label
It’s right on the label – the custom CCL surface-printed flexo label that saved Canandaigua Wine both time and money. Isn’t that refreshing?
What’s revolutionary about this K Cider label from Canandaigua Wine is it’s flexo surface-printed, not reverse-printed. And it makes a world of difference in its cost not quality. CCL Auto-Sleeve knew it could be done. They knew they could create the first surface-printed flexo label with a sophisticated matte black surface to replicate K Cider’s more expensive gravure-printed sleeve.

All they had to do was prove it. “We really wanted a North American source to create this label for the U.S. launch of our bigger K Cider 650 ml/22 oz. bottles,” commented Canandaigua Wine Manager of Procurement Michael Mattia. “CCL Auto-Sleeve worked with us every step of the way.”

The CCL Auto-Sleeve team went to work on the seven-color, 360° top-to-bottom sleeve that was scuff resistant to tackle rough shipping and handling conditions; color consistent from batch to batch; and welded to exacting tolerances so all you see is a continuous, sleek-looking black finish from every angle of the amber glass bottle from Saint-Gobain Containers.

“Up until now, surface-printed flexo shrink sleeve labels were never done,” explains CCL Auto-Sleeve General Manager, Roy Marschke. Among the many technical challenges facing CCL Auto-Sleeve, they were developing an ink system in flexo that could withstand a steam shrink tunnel. Since the 50 micron PET film label is surface printed, the ink is directly exposed to the steam. Not only did CCL Auto-Sleeve’s proprietary inks stand up to the challenge, the flexo-printing technology produced the look and quality of its more expensive rival–gravure. Flexo also enables graphic and ingredient changes without customers repeatedly incurring metal cylinder costs needed for gravure. Canandaigua Wine’s labeler, Alliance Labeling, touts these labels as “the industry’s best running shrink labels.”
